You are holding the 20th issue of “Figure Modelling” in Mr Black Publications’ Scale Model Handbook series. This is the 24th book we’ve published, with 20 of our titles covering figure modelling, two on modelling dioramas and a further two of our popular “World War Two” modelling specials.
We decided to celebrate our 20th edition in Figure Modelling series by featuring only WWI and WWII themes, two of our most popular periods. In this issue, you can read 11 different articles – five on WWI and six on WWII.
The articles have been written by four well-known artists with lots of tips and techniques about modelling miniature figures, busts and vignettes. Chosen subjects are covered in detail and illustrated with step-by-step photos and explanatory texts.
Sergey Popovichenko presents a large scale bust painted with oils and acrylics, depicting a British Infantry Soldier at Somme Battle on 1916. Eight pages with 58 SBS photos reveal exquisite details on painting, weathering and how to “give life” to this excellent resin bust sculpted by Young B Song and produced by Young Miniatures.
Mike “The Kiwi” Butler presents another eight-page masterpiece feature about creating a historical moment in miniature form using the Fusilier set in 54mm. The sculpting was done by Steve “the Fusilier” Warrilow. The five figures vignette depicts the ANZACS on Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli Campaign, August 1915. Mike also used original soil from the ground there!
Next in the row is a three-page article by Stelios Neofytidis; a Stormtrooper in 75mm sculpted by Andrew Cairns and produced in high-quality resin by AC Models. This is an excellent sculpting with a realistic pose which Stelios’ painting gave life.
The famous flying Ace of WWI Eduard-Maria Joseph Ritter von Schleich, better known as the “Black Knight of Germany”, is the theme of a three-page article made by Mr Black Studio. This figure was sculpted by the well-known artist Mike Good! A lot of historical data and all the necessary mixing recipes for creating a natural looking leather coat and figure.
Stelios strikes again with an article about the Canadian Ace of WWI, Billy Bishop an impressive figure sculpted by Mike Good and produced by Model Cellar. An excellent reference for painting dark tone leathers.
In a seven-page feature with lots of step-by-step photos (45) master artist Toshihiro Sano, one of our regular Japanese contributors, presents a guide to painting a U-boat Commander in WWII, a 180mm bust from Young Miniatures using Tamiya enamels.
The next three-page article depicts a two figures vignette in 1/35 scale from the first days of the Invasion of Russia, Operation Barbarossa. This article explains how to do minor conversions to commercial figure kits so as to produce a nice, simple but also unique small diorama. Made by Mr Black Studio.
A nice winter scene from Ardennes 1944 using Alpine Miniatures US Infantry Officer in 1/35 scale is the next theme made by Toshihiro Sano. Sort but explanatory text with all the necessary color mixing recipes to make a similar vignette. Get inspired by Toshihiro!
Followed up with another two figures winter scene vignette depicting a moment of the Third Battle of Kharkov. Stelios has used one Alpine and one Sovereign 2000 figure and changed the heads giving a totally different personality to the initial kits! Read a lot of interesting tips and techniques for creating this nice winter scene.
Somewhere in Stalingrad is the title of the next winter scene vignette made by Mr Black Studio. The Warriors three figures kit, unfortunately, is discontinued but the painting and creating techniques can be used in similar themes. We used the two figures with small alternations.
The contents of the book and WWII themes are closing with the impressive 120mm bust of a German Officer, 116th Panzer Division Windhund by Toshihiro Sano. This is an Alpine Miniatures kit originally sculpted by Mike Good and the conversion made by Taesung Harmms. Awesome painting by Toshihiro using Tamiya Enamels that brought to him two Gold Medals at two major shows held in Chicago, USA (October 2016 and July 2017).
Thanks must go to all our contributors for their support and for sharing their secrets with us. Special thanks are due to Pietro Balloni, Luca Marchetti, Alex Vallejo, Darren Parker-Mead, Man Jin Kim, Alexey Lucanev, Fernando Vallejo, Balazs Schuller, Taesung Harmms, Yannis Papadopoulos and last, but not least our English text editor Ken Jones.
We hope you enjoy our latest edition!
